Beginning in Fall 1998, a Sacramento State student may repeat any course one time at Sacramento State without department approval. The first grade earned remains on the student's transcript, but only the grade earned in the second enrollment will be used in the calculation of grade point average. The student must file a Repeat Grade Replacement Petition at the Admissions and Records Office as soon as she or he is registered in the repeat course. It is strongly recommended that students meet with an advisor to discuss preparation and strategies for successful completion of the course.
Grades earned in repeats after the second attempt (first repeat) will be averaged with the second and subsequent attempts. Grades of courses taken and repeated prior to Fall 1998 will be treated according to repeat policies in effect at that time.
Departments may limit the number of times a course may be repeated within an academic major. If a student enrolls in a course more than the allowed number of times, the department may administratively drop the registration, or may refuse to accept the grade in fulfillment of graduation requirements. Department chair's signature is required on the Repeat Grade Replacement Petition if the repeated course differs in title or number from the original, or if either course was taken at a transfer school. Obtain the chair's approval before enrolling to be sure the courses are equivalent in terms of content and emphasis.
The repeat policy of a transfer institution, if it can be determined, applies to a student's record at the time of transfer to Sacramento State. If it cannot be determined, Sacramento State policy will apply.

Note to Graduate Students: Grades earned in courses repeated as a postbaccalaureate student may not be used to replace grades earned as an undergraduate. Grades earned at other institutions are not counted in Sacramento State GPA and may not be used for grade replacement.
