Cruising the Backwaters of the California Delta

Come join us! Cruise the Delta waters and learn about the cultural and natural history of this historic area. We will travel through Carquinez Strait, Suisun Bay, Glen Cove, Port Costa, Benicia, the Mothball Fleet, and into California's largest marsh, Suisun Marsh. The Mothball Fleet contains nearly 1200 civilian and military ships and is a veritable museum of ships. We will stop for lunch in Suisun City. While many of the ships are still quite young and serviceable, several date from WWII. The following day we will cruise up the Napa River to the historic city of Napa for lunch. The return tip downriver to Vallejo affords another scenic opportunity to look for wildlife.

Our captain, and instructor, is a biologist by training and a historian by interest. Our vessel is a comfortable, 50-foot custom trawler, refitted for educational cruises. Large windows provide panoramic viewing from inside the saloon and pilot house. Outside, the spacious main deck and flying bridge allow outstanding viewing and ease of movement. Narratives are herd from are speakers throughout the boat.

We will stay at the Holiday Inn Vallejo. This is a full-service hotel with comfortable rooms and private baths recently, refurbished with free hotel parking. We'll have breakfast and dinners at the hotel; lunches ashore. Trips involve walking and stairs, comfortable attire is advised.

Program registration is $329 and is payable through the Boston office. Explore this and/or other international Elderhostel options.
